In honour of The Bike

A BICYCLE is not a ticket to your dreams.
It’s not a romantic poem immortalized in black and white photography.
IT DOESN’T NOTICE … if you’re suffering nobly through wind & rain.
Or care if your ride is epic enough.
But it does leap forward when you push the pedals.
It dives and carves and sprints.
It gives back exactly what you put in.
And of course. It can make you feel REALLY DAMN AWESOME

Tour of Sibiu 2012. I can't wait for this year's edition! Tour of Sibiu 2012. I can’t wait for this year’s edition!

The glorious Transfagarasan

constructed between 1970 and 1974, during the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu. It came as a response to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union. Ceaușescu wanted to ensure quick military access across the mountains in the event the Soviets attempted a similar move into Romania. Consequently, the road was built mainly with military forces, at a high cost both financially and from a human standpoint—roughly 6 million kilograms of dynamite were used on the northern face, and the official records mention that about 40 soldiers lost their lives in building accidents. The road climbs to 2,034 metres altitude. The most spectacular route is from the North. It is a winding road, dotted with steep hairpin turns, long S-curves, and sharp descents. The Transfăgărășan is both an attraction and a challenge for hikers, cyclists, drivers and motorcycle enthusiasts alike.

Packing

So, you’ll have to excuse this. I’m not relaly sure if the readers of this blog are used to actually reading, but for those of you who can bear it and who would be interested this is the first in a series on photography work, and how to do it…. or somewhere around the subject of photography. This first episode will be about packing, how i pack for going on assignment and how you should or shouldn’t do it.

Never take too much gear with you. You will be hating yourself for bringing along that big ass tripod on a mountain hike where you also have food, clothes, tent, sleeping bag and enough camera gear to sink a small ship with you. YOU are the one who will have to carry it. If the purpose of the trip isn’t to channel Ansel Adams bring only one camera and 2-3 lenses tops, a gorilla-pod or a bean bag. Usually i just find a rock to put my camera on, and i have a hiking monopod that also doubles as a camera monopod. Fancy, innit?

Tonight I’m getting ready to head out on asignment too. I’ll be heading towards Sibiu to photograph the Tour of Sibiu. It’ll be awesome! Plus, I’ll only be taking a small-ish backpack with me and a photo belt with two lens bags on it.  I find it sufficient like this as i’ll be staying in a hotel and i should be mostly taken care of.

Inside this magnificent bag and belt i’ll be bringing everything i need to document a week long sports event. Ideally i would’ve used a NewsWear chestvest for such an event but in this case it was imposible to get a hold of one due to some restraints on my part.

Inside these i have:

My cameras: MAIN – Canon 5d mk2 SECONDARY: Canon 30d

Lenses: 70-200 L , x1.4 L converter, 50 1.8, 17-35 and the beautiful 135 f2 L

One flash: 520

All sorts of filters, extra batteries, 40gb of CF cards

My trusty Harddrive: PONY

15 inch Laptop

Clothes, sunglasses, etc.

I don’t have a tripod as it’d be superfluous, just like some other gear like the 300 L.

What else would you bring with you to such an event? This, i feel, completes every possible need i’d have for photographing the event.
